8th October.

Today I went through some of the optional props and in my tutorial with Gareth we came to the conclusion that it would be benificial for me to create a props breakdown, with research, so that I have a definite plan. It is clear that having back up research is key as a designer and knowing where your ideas came from gives you more confidence. I'm also going to give more consideration to the lighting and therefore the positioning of certain aspects in my set design. I think that by drawing out and thinking where I want the focus of the audience to be will give me a better understanding of lighting and set design in general. Below are some pictures of the shields that Sean gave us as examples of what he wanted:
This is the ideal method of using the shield, therefore I informed my costume supervisor that we need some fake leather. Some is also needed for the bands around the waists in some of the costume designs.
The shield needs to be the shape of the one on the left and the size of the one on the right. In discussion with my technical supervisor, Selina, we agreed that it should be made of a thick plastic as that is what the gold one is made from and that is very strong.
I'm also understanding more and more how much communication is key in costume and set design. Not only in explaining what you want someone to do but also explaining designs and design decisions. I think improvement in this will come from practice and preparation and being as informed as possible.
