Today has been a really busy day but I feel that a lot of progress has been made and I'm understanding more and more the importance of how the team works and each person's role within that. The production manager and I had long discussions about the travel signs and how they are going to work and we have resolved that the scaffolding will be used with the signs on opposite corners flat against the scaffolding, tied with rope (this is aesthetically interesting and in keeping with the rest of the set). There will be enough room for the actor to change it easily and no audience member will be seated there. Through walking round the studio theatre and imagining how this would work it became clear what the main issues were: health and safety - nothing should fall; space - is there room to flip the signs over and how it would be done by the actors i.e. ease of movement. I am really pleased we resolved these issues and reached a point where the materials can be ordered and things can progress on this element.
I also had in depth discussions with the makers as to how the costumes are going to be made and any issues that need resolving. The main problems were fastenings and with help from research and books these issues were easily resolved. However I think when I'm designing in the future it is something which seems obvious but I should really consider more - how will the actor/actress put on the garment?
